Willie Jones III Discusses Jazz Icon Gerald Cannon

One of the jazz industries greatest bassists, Gerald Cannon, has a new album out titled "Combinations." Our own jazz great Willie Jones III was interviewed by Modern Drummer in an attempt to discover what he had to say about not only Cannon's new album, but about him as a musician as well. Here's just a bit about what Jones had to say.

“We’ve always had a tight groove as far as locking up the rhythm section,” Jones says. “In jazz, the groove and the pocket are in the ride cymbal. Gerald is always listening to how I’m attacking the ride. I’m always considering: Does this bassist play ahead of the beat, behind the beat, or right down the middle? Gerald is always right down the middle, which is perfect for me.”
